WESTPORT — While the fate of the Westport Community Gardens remains a political battlefield, the gardeners are inviting the public to visit their ripening green fields Sunday to help celebrate the gardens’ 20th anniversary.

The event, billed as a “Pop-Up Give-Away,” will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday, Aug. 27, at the community gardens, adjacent to Long Lots Elementary School, 13 Hyde Lane.

Visitors will be able to tour the gardens, as well as “take away some fresh vegetables, herbs or flowers,” according to event organizers.

Children will have an opportunity to harvest onions and potatoes from the plot of Lou Weinberg, the chairman of the community gardens.
