WESTPORT — A “Rainbow Crosswalk,” a permanent downtown feature spearheaded by Westport Pride, will be installed Monday morning.
The permanent crosswalk — featuring an array of colors that reflect the LGBTQ community’s diversity — will be installed at the intersection of Taylor Place and Jesup Road starting at 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 2.
The crosswalk will be dedicated during a ceremony on “National Coming Out Day,” set for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11.
The permanent crosswalk, approved by the Board of Selectwomen in June, replaces a temporary rainbow feature at the same site installed just prior to the annual Westport Pride celebration earlier that month.
Westport Pride asked that the crosswalk be made permanent when the temporary version began to show signs of wear and tear after a few weeks.
The permanent crosswalk was designed by Brian McGunagle, the founder of Westport Pride, who said in a statement that its “colors are there to represent the full breadth of the LGBTQ+ community and to serve as a message of hope, inclusion and a reminder that all are welcome in Westport.”

Maybe we should devote more time to cleaning up the sidewalks and roads in town, which have considerably more trash on them than in the recent past, rather than painting ridiculous rainbows. In fact I recently had the experience of observing ankle deep trash around the perimeter of one of our downtown parking lots. Let’s get on that, shall we?
