WESTPORT — Two community menorah-lighting ceremonies will herald the local observance of Hanukkah this year.
Hanukkah, observed by Jews from sundown Nov. 28 through the evening of Dec. 6, is known as the Festival of Lights. Over the course of eight days, the holiday is marked by lighting a candle daily on a menorah, accompanied by special foods, playing dreidel, exchanging gifts and songs.
This 14th annual local observance of the Festival of Lights is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, in front of the shopping center housing Trader Joe’s, 400 Post Road East. It is sponsored by the Schneerson Center for Jewish Life of Connecticut.
The event, led by Rabbi Levi Stone of the Schneerson Center, will feature music, as well as individually wrapped cookies, gelt and dreidels for attendees. The observance is free and open to all.
For more information, visit the Schneerson Center website here or call 203-635-4118.
The second menorah lighting will take place at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the corner of Main Street and Post Road East.
Rabbis from four Jewish congregations in Westport are scheduled to lead the downtown ceremony, which is open to the public.
