WESTPORT — A man who survived the collapse of the World Trade Center towers in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks will recount his harrowing experience Dec. 3 at the Westport Library.

Tom Canavan, who worked as a securities specialist on the 47th floor of the World Trade Center’s North Tower, will be the featured guest at the program set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the library, 20 Jesup Road.

Canavan will be joined in the discussion by Christie Seyglinski, a volunteer at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum who became a friend of Canavan, and Andrew Colabella, a Representative Town Meeting member.

Canavan, initially able to escape the North Tower from his workplace at Unity Bank on the 47th floor after it was struck by an airliner hijacked by terrorists, was engulfed by debris from the South Tower as it collapsed just as he emerged into the Trade Center’s plaza.

He survived the collapse, but was buried beneath the structure’s wreckage. However, he and a security guard from the building managed to crawl through the rubble to find an opening onto a nearby street.

The watch Canavan was wearing that day is now part of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum’s collection. A post on the museum’s website begins: “Time stands frozen on the dust-coated, battery-operated and water-resistant men’s wristwatch. The glass watch face has some dried blood residue from its owner, Tom Canavan, who survived one of the most tragic days in New York City history.”
