WESTPORT–The Parks and Recreation department has deployed a number of cameras on the Longshore Club Park property. According to Carman Roda, the Operations Director of Parks and Rec. said the most recently installed camera flanks the Longshore entrance and “records vehicle makes and models and license plates,” in case of vandalism or burglary.
There was a break-in at the golf pro shop last year and the department had no photographic evidence of cars entering the park.
There are a number of cameras in Longshore, Roda explained: “the pavilion, tennis courts, pool area and marina” all have cameras, as do the maintenance building and the Parks and Rec. office building.
The cameras are there to ensure the safety of the park’s patrons and to make sure that the department has a way to monitor activity across the park, Roda said.

Carmen, thank you for the explanation and the offer to answer any questions I might have. I’m assuming that this article does a good job of laying out the position of Parks and Rec and the town of Westport. If not, please advise.
We are told by some that local issues aren’t partisan. Potholes, etc. I largely agree with this when it comes to the standard stuff of Westport town business: zoning, public works, education, etc.
But now that the town has decided to get into the business of surveiling its “Crown Jewels” in an era of what many (myself included) believe to be excessive and illegal actions by the federal government, I think this issue is different.
I would think the RTC and DTC should be asking their potential candidates for selectfolk the following question
“Would you comply with a request from ICE to turn over surveillance video from Longshore and any other properties surveilled by the town?”
It is not a far fetched question. It addresses a situation being faced today by mayors and town leaders all over the country. It’s not a partisan question
I think it is a fair question and one I will be asking anyone I might vote for in November.
Gosh John, I sure hope they would turn over surveillance footage to ICE who are entrusted with protecting American citizens from criminal illegal aliens. I would like to know that our safety is of paramount importance to elected officials, local or otherwise. BTW, I wonder why there is so much more criminal activity here than even a few ago. Hmm, there might just be a connection.
Hi Sharon, you would not get my vote. You would have done well in Berlin circa 1933
Such a fresh new take on issues! Everybody is a NAZI who believes in the laws of the land being followed, especially as they pertain to public safety. Such an inane comment. Furthermore I am not running for any office and therefore do not seek your vote. Try to keep up here John.
