Tickets are still available for the annual Independence Day celebration fireworks show at Compo Beach on Wednesday evening, July 2. But they’re going fast.

Demand is high with the forecast calling for a pleasant evening, said Westport Police Corporal Craig Bergamo, who is also president of the Westport Police Athletic League, organizer of the event. Each year, 10,000 to 13,000 people gather on the beach for what Bergami said is “the best show around.”

If the weather turns bad, the rain date will be Thursday, July 3.

The show has run for more than 25 years and is a highlight of the year, lighting up the night sky with high-end Grucci fireworks fired from a barge loaded on Long Island and tugged across the sound, Bergamo said.

Big Fundraiser

It is also the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Westport PAL, the community youth sports organization. Tickets, at $75 per carload, are available at the town Parks and Recreation Office, 260 Compo Road South, during business hours; and the town police department, 50 Jessup Road, round the clock. (Cash or check only.)

“It is far better than any show,” Bergamo said. “We make it worth their while for their donation.”

Westport PAL organizes 11 sports played by more than 2,500 youngsters, Bergamo said.

Thank you, Melissa and Doug

Bargamo thanked long-time Westport residents Melissa and Doug Bernstein, who are sponsoring the event, as they have in the past.

“This is our favorite time of year in Westport, seeing this amazing community gather together for such a joy-filled event,” the Bernsteins said.

Bergamo also thanked the Town of Westport for the use of the Compo Beach, and the Parks and Recreation Office, which helps run the event and cleans up afterward.

On the day of the show, the beach will close to the general public at 4 p.m., and will re-open for fireworks show ticket holders at 5 p.m. On-street parking is prohibited in the Compo Beach area on the day of the show, whether it is Wednesday or the rain date, Thursday.

The fireworks begin at 9 p.m.

People may bring their own food and beverages, but no glass is allowed.

“It’s the biggest party of the year for the Town of Westport,” Bergamo said, asking attendees to, “be responsible and courteous to everyone.”
