WESTPORT – The town is hosting two sessions next week aimed at receiving feedback for improving accessibility in public spaces for those with disabilities. Whether you live with a disability, support someone who does, or care about making Westport inclusive for all, your feedback is needed.
Feedback and updates
The two in-person community engagement sessions–to gather feedback and share updates–will take place at the Center for Senior Activities, at 21 Imperial Ave., on Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday, Aug. 21, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Each session will be led by John McGovern, head of the Western Connecticut Council of Government’s (WestCOG) Accessibility Practice. Register here.
During the sessions, McGovern will review key Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for town facilities and parks, highlight findings from recent assessments, invite attendees to share needs and suggestions, and outline next steps for the town’s transition plan.
Those who cannot attend in person can still help by completing a short, anonymous survey here.
Parks and public facilities
In 2024, WestCOG retained the W-T Group to develop ADA-compliant transition plans for parks and public facilities throughout its communities. These plans identify existing access barriers and outline phased improvements over time.
If you need a disability-related accommodation, other than the provided sign language interpreter, please indicate your needs via the registration link or contact Eileen Lavigne, Assistant Town Attorney, 203-341-1043 or elavigne@westportct.gov.
