WESTPORT — A “Japanese Fall Festival,” with traditional drumming, dance, folktales, martial arts and crafts, is set Sept. 10 on Jesup Green.
The outdoor event, open to the public and sponsored by the Japan Society of Fairfield County, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, on the downtown green, next to the Westport Library.
The festival will kick off with Japanese taiko drumming by the New York Taiko Aiko Kai of the Taiko Society of Teacher’s College, Columbia University, followed by more sets during the afternoon. The drummers also will offer a hands-on workshop, according to a publicity release.
Attendees will be invited to join traditional dances, such as Tanko Bushi (Coal Miner’s Dance), Hanagasa Ondo (“Flower Hat” Dance), AIUE Ondo, the contemporary Dancing Hero and a version of Awa Odori choreographed by the professional Takarabune troupe, event organizers said.

Folktales will be told through short performances; martial arts skills will be demonstrated by students of Aikido of Norwalk, and Yumi McCarthy, who teaches Japanese at Norwalk Community College, will demonstrate calligraphy and write attendees’ names in Japanese.
There also will be crafts and games, as well as displays of traditional clothing and ceramics.
Packaged Japanese snacks and drinks will be available.
In case of inclement weather, the festival will be cancelled. Updates will be posted on the Facebook page of the Japan Society of Fairfield County.
