SOUTHPORT – Fans of the famous author Jane Austen can show their appreciation this week at a celebration honoring the 250th anniversary of her birth.

The free event will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18th at the Pequot Library. Registration is encouraged, and should be done at this link by Wednesday, Dec. 17th.

The celebration takes place just a couple of days late, as Austen was born on Dec. 16th, 1775. Her works, which have been celebrated for their wit and social commentary on English society, include Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Mansfield Park.

Christine Catallo, Director of Library Services and a “devoted Jane Austen fan,” will discuss the life and work of Austen, her novels and the appeal they continue to hold for readers, and the adaptations and modernizations of her work. The event will also include punch and sweets, and visitors are encouraged to wear regency dress.
