WESTPORT — Young artists scared up fantastical images of the Halloween season in decorating dozens of local storefront windows for the annual Halloween Window Painting Contest, sponsored by the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce.

Winners of the contest were announced Thursday by chamber officials, who noted the judges were able to check out all the art work before this week’s nor’easter storm washed away some of the paintings.

A record number of 131 youngsters participated in the event, rendering their interpretations of Halloween on the windows of 65 stores and businesses around town, according to the chamber.

“What a turnout for a fun artistic day around town,” Matthew Mandell, the chamber’s executive director, said in a statement announcing the winners. “The kids and families were so enthusiastic and really enjoyed the event.  A big shout out to all the businesses that answered the call for extra windows.”

Winners received a certificate and $25 gift card to use at Cold Fusion Gelato on Main Street.
