WESTPORT–If you have unneeded medications, you can bring them to the Westport Center for Senior Activities on April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Westport Police Department will collect tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs as part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The senior center is at 21 Imperial Ave.

Do not bring syringes, sharps or illicit drugs. Liquids, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container.

Take Back Day offers free and anonymous disposal of unneeded medications at almost 5,000 drop-off locations nationwide, a release from the Westport police said.

The take-back event has helped Americans easily rid their homes of medications that are old, expired or no longer needed, but that can become a gateway to addiction, according to the release. The collected medications will be disposed of at several incineration locations throughout New England that will convert the pharmaceutical waste into clean, renewable energy for local communities.

Since 2010, this initiative has resulted in over 1.9 million pounds of pharmaceutical waste collected over 29 drug take-back events in New England.

Can’t make it April 25? No problem. The Westport police keep a year-round collection bin located in the lobby of police headquarters, 50 Jesup Road, so drugs can be properly disposed of at any time. The department also offers a supply of medication disposal bags in the lobby with instructions for proper disposal of liquid and pill form medications.
