WESTPORT — A food collection to stock the shelves of local food pantries will take place Saturday.
Food donations will be collected from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Stop & Shop supermarket, 1790 Post Road East. The project is being organized by the Police Department, in partnership with the Westport Sunrise Rotary Club, the Westport Police Benevolent Association and Stop & Shop.
Police officers and volunteers from community groups will be on hand to collect and sort donations.
The donated food will be distributed to the Homes with Hope pantry at the Gillespie Center and the town Department of Human Services, which in collaboration with the Westport Woman’s Club, provides support for people facing food insecurity.
Event organizers are seeking donation of the following non-perishable foods (items in glass jars cannot be accepted): Applesauce, breakfast bars, boxed macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables and canned fruit.
Canned meat and fish, canned soup, stew and chili, cups of soups and ramen noodles, cereal, granola and protein bars and hamburger or tuna helper. Also, ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, oatmeal, pancake mix and syrup, pasta and tomato sauce.
And, peanut butter, jelly, rice, miscellaneous snacks and gluten-free foods like pasta, soups and cereal.
Hygiene items such as toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant also will be accepted.
