WESTPORT — A community gathering to show “solidarity and support” for Israel in the wake of terrorist attacks over the weekend will be hosted Monday at Temple Israel.
The program, planned in collaboration with the Jewish Federation of Greater Fairfield County, is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at the synagogue, 14 Coleytown Road.

Rabbi Michael S. Friedman of Temple Israel, in a Sunday statement announcing the community gathering, described the attacks as “horrific” and “a disaster of unimaginable proportions.”
Following is Friedman’s full statement:
“The news from Israel is horrific. Over 600 Israelis killed, more than 2,000 wounded, terrorists still potentially at large, hundreds of hostages taken to Gaza. It’s a disaster of unimaginable proportions for the State of Israel and for the many families whose lives will never be the same.
“Everyone we know in Israel is impacted: our own family members, our former Israeli emissaries, congregants who have made aliyah, and even some TI families who flew to Israel late last week expecting a very different type of visit.
“So many of us feel helpless. We are desperate to lend support, but it’s difficult to know exactly how at this still-early stage. As opportunities become clear we will, of course, let you know.
“Most immediately, Temple Israel will host a community-wide gathering of solidarity and support tomorrow, Monday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m., in collaboration with the Jewish Federation of Greater Fairfield County.
“This event will bring together all our local congregations and clergy, as well as many elected officials who have reached out to offer support. Our hope is to mourn together, pray together, express our love for Israel together, and find unity together.
“It is important to note that while security is always top priority here at TI, we are especially vigilant at a time like this. We continue to have a very strong relationship with our security partners and are leveraging those relationships today and in the days to come.”
