WESTPORT — Chef’s? Caesar? Cobb? Toss Your Own?

In Westport, this March is arriving as neither a lion nor a lamb, but as a salad — freshly mixed, adorned and dressed in all kinds of ways — because it’s been designated the month of the “Great Westport Salad Contest” by the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce.

Following chamber-sponsored events to crown the best pizza, burger, soup and sandwich in town, the business group this year is asking residents to select the best local salads — in their many varieties.

Ballots in the month-long contest can be cast for favorites in eight salad categories: Cobb, Chef’s, Caesar, Deli, Mediterranean, Greens, Make Your Own and Unique.

The best Caesar salad is one of the categories in the “Great Westport Salad Contest” sponsored by the Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce. Pictured is a “Cajun air fryer crispy chicken Caesar salad,” as prepared on PrettyDelicious website

The winners, chosen from more than 20 culinary establishments, will be selected by voting online at the Great Westport Salad Contest webpage from March 1-31.

Contest participants, according to the chamber, include: A&S Fine Foods, Calise’s, Capuli, Don Memo, Granola Bar, Joe’s Pizza, Kawa Ni, LaPlage, Manna Toast, Match Burger Lobster, Mystic Market, Organic Krush, Pane e Bene, Parker Mansion, Planet Pizza, Rizzuto’s, Romanacci, Spotted Horse, the Boathouse, the Whelk, Tutti’s and Winfield Street Deli.

Each culinary competitor can enter up to four categories, but can win only two at most, according to the chamber. Winners will be announced in April.

“This is a fun way for our community to interact, support our local restaurants, delis and markets, and best of all, get to eat lots of delicious salads,” Matthew Mandell, the chamber’s executive director, said in an announcement for the contest.
