WESTPORT — The Westport Astronomical Society has issued a call to amateur radio fans to join the annual American Radio Relay League Field Days event — a nationwide emergency communications exercise — to be hosted June 22 and 23 at the group’s Bayberry Lane observatory.
The event, featuring participation by amateur radio clubs in southern Connecticut, will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, at WAS headquarters, 182 Bayberry Lane.
The public is welcome to attend, according to organizers.
K1WAS, the Westport Astronomical Society’s amateur radio club, will be joined during the exercise by members of the Housatonic Amateur Radio Club, Greater Norwalk Amateur Radio Corp. and Greater Fairfield Amateur Radio Association.
ARRL Field Day, an annual event organized since 1933, coordinates amateur radio operators across North America “by establishing temporary ham radio stations in public locations to demonstrate their skill and service,” according to publicity for the event.
The communications exercise, organizers say, could be particularly relevant this year given predictions of an “active” hurricane season and the role amateur radio operators could play in the event of an emergency.
