WESTPORT, CT — With the nation’s 250th birthday around the corner, Wakeman Town Farm is inviting the community to step back in time through their palates.
The event, scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 7 p.m., offers a hands-on experience in Tim’s Kitchen. Participants will prepare a multi-course meal rooted in 18th-century tradition, before sitting down to dine.
A menu rooted in history
The evening’s menu is designed to reflect the hearty and flavorful fare found in Revolutionary-era public houses:
- Pepper Pot: A slow-braised beef and vegetable stew featuring a balance of subtle heat and sweetness.
- Traditional Onion Pie: A savory colonial staple.
- Spring Asparagus Salad: Utilizing seasonal ingredients common to local farmsteads.
- Chocolate Torte: A decadent finish to the communal meal.
- Cherry Bounce: A spiced cherry liqueur—reportedly a favorite of George Washington.
Beyond the plate
While the cooking is central to the evening, Ganeshram will provide historical context throughout the session. As an author and historian, she will lead a conversation regarding the role of colonial-era taverns, exploring how these establishments functioned as sites for political debate, news sharing, and community building during the birth of the nation.
