WESTPORT — Call it weather whiplash.
As the year ends, Westport is engulfed in an unseasonably warm bubble, shrouded in fog and drizzling rain.
In stark contrast, a week earlier southwestern Connecticut plunged into a deep freeze on the heels of a blustery pre-Christmas storm. Even as skies cleared and the sun emerged, temperatures failed to crack the freezing mark over the first several days of the week.
However, this Saturday, New Year’s Eve, the day’s top temperature will be about 20 degrees warmer, cresting at 50 degrees.
And the National Weather Service forecast calls for daytime high temperatures in the low- to mid-50s at least through Tuesday.
Clouding the balmy outlook, however, is a warning of dense fog though Saturday evening and periodic showers overnight threatening to dampen celebrations heralding the new year.
Sun will gild the first day of 2023, the NWS predicts, with the Fahrenheit reaching a high in the mid-50s.

Monday is expected to be partly cloudy with temperatures in the low-50s.
The forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday calls for even warmer temperatures — perhaps near 60 degrees — but with an increasing threat of showers, according to the weather service.
