WESTPORT — “The show will go on.”

With that declaration, officials of the Westport Country Playhouse announced Thursday the theater’s six-week fundraising campaign — “Reimagined: Save Your Playhouse” — has ensured the 92-year-old theater’s future, collecting a total of $1,941,557 in cash and pledges toward the $2 million goal.

Although funds raised were just shy of the $2 million target set by July 31, Athena Adamson, the playhouse board of trustees chairwoman, said in the statement, “Major gift conversations are ongoing that very soon could bring us well beyond our goal.” To make a donation, click here.

Playhouse officials “thank our wonderful community who stepped up to ‘Save the Playhouse’ and shape it for future generations,” Adamson said.

The campaign was launched in the third week of June, with the “immediate” goal of raising $2 million to address the theater’s fiscal crisis, caused in large part by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Consequences of those financial problems included cancellation of three of the five playhouse productions announced for the 2023 season, as well as staffing cutbacks.

The “reimagination” element of the fundraising campaign is supposed to help the playhouse broaden offerings beyond the traditional live theater productions that have been its mainstay for nearly a century.

Plans, starting in January, call for the theater to function as a “performing arts center” through next August. Presentations will include single-night events, including cabaret, comedy, music, play-readings and speakers.

Then, from September of next year through March 2025, the playhouse will mount three theatrical productions.

Overseeing the theatrical productions will be Mark Shanahan, who playhouse officials recently announced will take over as artistic director next year, succeeding Mark Lamos, who is stepping down after 15 seasons.

The fundraiser continues to offer naming opportunities, including engraved paving stones in the playhouse courtyard and seat plates in the theater. For details, email development@westportplayhouse.org.
