WESTPORT–Guitarist Dave Stryker will perform at the VFW Post 399 this Thursday, Aug. 20. The show is part of the Jazz at the Post series, which offers a new concert each Thursday, presented by the Jazz Society of Fairfield County.
Stryker will be joined by Greg Wall on tenor and soprano saxophones, David Berkman on piano, Marcus McLaurine on bass and Steve Johns on drums
The release says whether you’ve heard guitarist Dave Stryker leading his own group (with 37 CD’s as a leader to date), or as a featured sideman with Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, and many others, you know why the Village Voice calls him “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years.”
Hot House magazine awarded him Best Guitarist — Fans Decision for 2017. He was voted once again as one of the top Jazz Guitarists in the 2025 Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls for the 15th time.
Dinner from Chef Derek Furino will be served at 6:45 p.m. Dinner reservations are not required.
Musical sets begin at 7:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. The 7:30 set cover charge is $20 ($15 for students / veterans). The cover fee for the late set is $10.
The Jazz Society of Fairfield County offers “free or low-cost concerts by accomplished artists, outreach to under-served audiences, and educational and performance opportunities for student, amateur and emerging professional musicians,” its website says.
Since 2015, the organization has worked with Post 399 to bring the weekly jazz event to the post’s home on the Saugatuck River, featuring “celebrated jazz artists such as Ethan Iverson, Antonio Hart, David Kikoski, Harvie S and Joe Farnsworth as well as introducing our audience to the new generation of musicians moving the tradition forward,” the society’s website says.
