WESTPORT–Trumpeter Andy Gravish will perform at the VFW Post 399 this Thursday, Sept. 24. The show is part of the Jazz at the Post series, which offers a new concert each Thursday, presented by the Jazz Society of Fairfield County.
Andy Gravish will play trumpet and sing and he will be accompanied by Greg Wall on tenor saxophone, David Morgan on piano, Yuriy Galkin on bass and Eric Halvorson on drums
According to the release, Andy Gravish is one of the most exciting musicians that plays regularly at the Post. His decades of experience, going all the way back to the big bands of Buddy Rich and Toshiko Akiyoshi to the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, small group records with major artists from Grover Washington to Dr. Lonnie Smith has created a mature artist with unlimited versatility with a truly unique melodic and swinging approach.
These five artists have been playing together for the past few years, and they expect to play Andy’s favorites, including tunes he “inherited” from Lee Morgan, Chet Baker and others.
Musical sets begin at 7:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. The 7:30 set cover charge is $20 ($15 for students / veterans). The cover fee for the late set is $10.
An optional dinner from Chef Derek Furino will be served from 6:45 p.m., no reservations required.
The Jazz Society of Fairfield County offers “free or low-cost concerts by accomplished artists, outreach to under-served audiences, and educational and performance opportunities for student, amateur and emerging professional musicians,” its website says.
Since 2015, the organization has worked with Post 399 to bring the weekly jazz event to the post’s home on the Saugatuck River, featuring “celebrated jazz artists such as Ethan Iverson, Antonio Hart, David Kikoski, Harvie S and Joe Farnsworth as well as introducing our audience to the new generation of musicians moving the tradition forward,” the society’s website says.
