WESTPORT–Abena Koomson-Davis and Steve Davis will perform at the VFW Post 399 this Thursday, July 9. The show is part of the Jazz at the Post series, which offers a new concert each Thursday, presented by the Jazz Society of Fairfield County.

This week’s shows features Koomson-Davis on vocals, Davis on trombone, Greg Wall on saxophones, Jeb Patton on piano, Phil Bowler on bass and Jason Tiemann on drums.

According to the release, Koomson-Davis is in a league of her own. She astounded the guests at JATP last summer; calling her a jazz singer is a serious understatement.  She is a celebrated Broadway actor and singer (Three-time Tony winner) who has performed with Stevie Wonder and recorded with Natalie Merchant.

Abena’s latest recording project, in tandem with her husband, the great trombonist Steve Davis, is not just another Jazz record. Her material is fresh, her swing is infectious, and she expresses the emotion of the songs she sings in a way most musicians could only fantasize about. Together, they are smooth, soulful, and always swinging hard!

Dinner by Chef Derek Furino will be served at 6:45 p.m. The price is $25 and reservations are not required.

Musical sets begin at 7:30 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. The 7:30 set cover charge is $20 ($15 for students / veterans). The cover fee for the late set is $10.

The Jazz Society of Fairfield County offers “free or low-cost concerts by accomplished artists, outreach to under-served audiences, and educational and performance opportunities for student, amateur and emerging professional musicians,” its website says.

Since 2015, the organization has worked with Post 399 to bring the weekly jazz event to the post’s home on the Saugatuck River, featuring “celebrated jazz artists such as Ethan Iverson, Antonio Hart, David Kikoski, Harvie S and Joe Farnsworth as well as introducing our audience to the new generation of musicians moving the tradition forward,” the society’s website says.
