Jonathan A. Cunitz, 84, of Westport, CT, died on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 23, 1942, in New York City, to the late Murray and Rose (“Moby”) Cunitz.
A lifelong amateur radio operator under the call signs W1BWS and W1CU, he reached fellow operators in every country in the world and was especially proud of serving as an amateur radio volunteer for the Paralympics.
He earned a B.S. cum laude in industrial engineering from Lehigh University and a master’s and doctorate in business administration from Harvard University, where he received a Ford Fellowship. The doctorate, paired with his first name, earned him the playful nickname “Dr. J.”
He taught at the graduate business schools of New York University, the University of Connecticut, and Central Michigan University, and served for several years as External Examiner at the University of Ghana. He held leadership and consulting roles at Chase Manhattan Bank and Xerox before founding his own management consulting practice. He worked as a sought after expert witness until the end of his life.
He volunteered his financial expertise to the office of Special Master Kenneth Feinberg, assisting some of the foreign victims’ families in connection with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.
In Westport, he served on the board of Temple Israel, the Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Representative Town Meeting (RTM), where he helped spearhead the town’s plastic bag ban, and as Treasurer of the Westport Library Board for eight years. The ban proved so successful that it earned its four sponsoring RTM representatives a 2009 Environmental Merit Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Huguette; his children, Nicole (Andy) Laskin, Danielle Cunitz, and Bryan (Tamara) Cunitz; his grandchildren, Sam Laskin, Alex Laskin, Ben Cunitz, and Karina Cunitz; and many family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held at Temple Israel, Westport, on Sunday, June 7th at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
