FAIRFIELD — FCIAC nemesis Fairfield Warde blanked visiting Staples 6-0 in a Saturday afternoon FCIAC baseball clash. The Wreckers were coming off a 5-3 setback at Glastonbury the day before.

Both Glastonbury and Warde are among the top teams in the state; they met in last year’s Class LL State Tournament semifinals with Glastonbury ultimately finishing runner-up.

Staples leadoff hitter Jules Cicero was 3-for-3 but was the only Wrecker to collect a hit. Warde plated four runs in the second inning and rolled to victory.

Staples starter Bruce Schlegelmich allowed six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts, surrendering some seeing-eye hits on a windy afternoon. Mark Kelly and Nate Pauley pitched well in relief.

Against Glastonbury, Staples jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and was ahead 3-1 in the fourth. Glastonbury scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to even the score, then tallied twice in the eighth.

Vince Vega and Connor Brill knocked in runs. Starting pitcher Lukas Snow went five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) and six hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

The Wreckers (2-2) return home for another tough FCIAC battle on Tuesday at St. Joseph of Trumbull, last year’s Class M State Champs, head to Westport for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
