WESTPORT — Taking on unbeaten Greenwich at home Tuesday, Staples girls basketball team nearly pulled off an upset.

But it wasn’t in the “Cards” as Greenwich held off the Wreckers 54-49 to improve to 11-0 (6-0 in FCIAC play). 

Staples dropped to 5-6 (4-2 in the conference).

The home team stayed in the game with nine 3-pointers. Addison Talbott (11 points) and Freya Harvey (nine) both canned a trio of shots from downtown.

Chloe Smith hit a 3-pointer among her 11 points, Marley Belzer had eight points and Ella Harrington and Emma Asiel both made a 3 and scored five. 

Staples trailed 13-10 after one quarter and 23-20 at the half. The Cardinals pulled ahead 40-31 going to the fourth. 

In the final period, Talbott hit two of her 3-pointers, Smith registered seven of her points, Harvey hit a 3 and Belzer scored to keep things close.
