WESTPORT — It’s a “lunarpalooza.” It’s “moonificent.”
It’s “OMN.” And it’s happening Saturday.
It’s International Observe the Moon Night, and the community is invited to join the observance by the Westport Astronomical Society.
The free local event, planned in conjunction with NASA’s observance of OMN, will take place from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the astronomical society’s observatory, 182 Bayberry Lane.
If the Saturday night skies are clear, the observatory dome will be opened and visitors will be able to get close-up views of the moon through telescopes. The event will not take place if skies are cloudy; check the WAS website for updates.
The moon will be in its “waxing gibbous” phase, or transitioning from a half moon to full moon.
WAS members will be on hand to help identify features that will be visible on the lunar surface, such as the sites of Apollo landings, craters, “oceans” and more.
Observe the Moon Night is an annual event around the globe, according to the WAS announcement, as people gather in all sorts of venues to learn more about why the moon “is an incredible body that has fascinated and puzzled our ancestors from the very first time we looked up.”
