WESTPORT — A longtime Westport resident who served his nation a Navy pilot during the Korean War and his town as a member of several government bodies has been selected as the grand marshal of this year’s Memorial Day parade and services.
Charles P. Lamb has been selected to lead the annual tribute to the nation’s fallen servicemen and women, which is set for Monday, May 27.
A resident of Westport since 1971, Lamb was 17 years old when he joined the Navy in 1946, through the Naval Aviation College Program, according to Monday’s announcement.
In 1948, he was sent to Pensacola Naval Air Station where he became midshipman and started ground school. In March 1950, he was designated by the Naval Air Training Command as a Naval aviator.
He went on to log more than 2,000 hours of flight time, earning two medals, each representing 20 aerial combat missions during the Korean War, while rising to the rank of lieutenant.
In 2022, the State of Connecticut recognized him for his military service during the Korean War-era.
In Westport, Lamb has served as a Representative Town Meeting member from District 1, as well as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals.
The Memorial Day parade will step off at 9 a.m. Monday, May 27, on Riverside Avenue, and follow its traditional route through downtown. The line of march heads to the Post Road, crosses the Saugatuck River, continuing to Myrtle Avenue, to Main Street and ending at Parker Harding Plaza.
Following the parade, a service is planned on Veterans Green.
In case of rain, the program will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Town Hall auditorium, 110 Myrtle Ave.
