WESTPORT — A commemoration of the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, scene of some of the bloodiest fighting in the Pacific during World War II, will take place Saturday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 399.

The program, featuring a presentation by Lt. Col. Raul Sifuentes, USMC (retired), of the Iwo Jima Association of America, will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at the post, 465 Riverside Ave.

“It’s a momentous occasion to pay tribute to the veterans who displayed extraordinary valor and resilience during one of the most challenging battles of World War II,” Phil Delgado, VFW Post 399’s quartermaster, said in a statement announcing the program.
