WESTPORT — Coming off its state championship run last season, the Staples High girls soccer team has picked up where it left off. The Wreckers are off to a 6-0-1 start to this year’s campaign.

The Wreckers, in a pair of home contests last week, bested Stamford 5-1 on Wednesday and blanked Darien 4-0 on Friday.

In the win over Stamford, the Wreckers did their damage in the first half to put the game away.

Staples got goals from Coco Crombie (who hit the net twice), Natalie Chudowsky, Gabbie DeBrito and Evelyn Chudowsky.

The early scoring barrage enabled the Wreckers to use a lot of substitute rotation.

“It was a nice win with everyone in the roster making an appearance,” Coach Barry Beattie said.

Against Darien, Staples led 2-0 at the half. Evelyn Chudowsky, set up by Neva Mermagen, opened the scoring and DeBrito cashed in on a penalty kick. Natalie Chudowsky played a part in the goal by drawing the penalty when she was tripped in the 18-yard box.

In the second half, Natalie Chudowsky scored twice, both on setups by Evelyn Chudowsky. Staples goalkeeper Sam Henske made key saves, including a quick-reaction foot stop on an in-close Darien chance, which would have sliced the lead in half early in the second half.

The Staples back line has also been strong as the Wreckers have conceded only one goal in these first seven matches. Coco Crombie, Leigh Foran, Sophie Hill and DeBrito were responsible for several clears and blocks in the win over Darien.

“I’m really happy with the way the girls have conducted themselves. They’re pushing well,” Beattie said.

Up next for Staples is a visit to Greenwich at 4 p.m. Wednesday. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
