WESTPORT — The Staples High girls soccer team continues its winning ways, charting four consecutive games without allowing a goal.

Staples followed up a 3-0 blanking of New Canaan on Sept. 11 with a 1-0 victory at Brien McMahon two days later. Neva Mermegan scored with a minute to play when she blasted a rocket from 30 yards out, off the cross bar and in.

“McMahon was a great win. We dominated possession for the whole game,” said Staples Coach Barry Beattie, whose team did not allow a shot against and piled up 14 in the win.

“We threw so much at them and they stood up to the test for 79 minutes,” Beattie said.

It was a quick turnaround for the Wreckers, who visited Ridgefield the next day, Sept. 14, and settled for a 0-0 tie.

“Ridgefield was more of the same from the day before, but two games in two days was tough for the players. We knocked on the door many times, but couldn’t find the break through,” Beattie said.

Next came a visit to Norwalk on Monday. This time, the Wreckers hit the net twice and came away with a 2-0 victory. Olivia Kovics scored the first and Chloe Barnes added a goal, both in the first half. The second half was played in a monsoon.

The Wreckers carry a record of 4-0-1 into a home game against Stamford at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
