WESTPORT — Less than a week after Westport school officials said they are on guard against threats of violence amid an upsurge of social-media threats elsewhere, the report of a person acting “erratically” on the Post Road prompted police to dispatch officers to Kings Highway and Saugatuck elementary schools as a precaution Wednesday.
Supt of Schools Thomas Scarice, in an emailed statement Wednesday afternoon, said concerns were raised when a Kings Highway administrator “observed a person walking on the Post Road exhibiting erratic behavior and making idle threats.”
The administrator alerted police, and as precautionary measure, officers were “quickly” dispatched to the Kings Highway and Saugatuck campuses, he said.
Though police determined there was no immediate threat, Scarice said, officers will remain at both schools for the rest of the day.
He added that people “may notice officers in the surrounding neighborhoods as well this afternoon.”
Lieut. David Wolf, the Westport police spokesman, said the suspect, although acting in a “somewhat erratic manner” as he walked past Kings Highway School, apparently did not make any direct threats to anyone.
Police were unable to locate the person, he said.
