Thomas “Tom” Michael Dean, 55, of Old Greenwich, Connecticut, died on Oct. 26, 2026, at Stamford Hospital, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Born on Sept. 18, 1971, in Rochester, New York, Tom was the youngest of the eight children of Evan and Janice Dean and was raised in Westport. Arriving after seven older brothers and sisters, he was adored by his siblings and shared an especially close bond with his mother. As her last child, Tom was the one Janice finally had time to dote on, and the two remained devoted to each other for the rest of her life. She even insisted on throwing him a grand 50th birthday celebration, a gesture unique among her children.
Tom treasured his place as the baby of the family. Though he was a quiet observer by nature, he was always the first to answer “I’ll be there” whenever the family came together, and those gatherings were among his greatest joys.
After college, Tom worked for Xerox and Chesebrough-Pond’s before joining Glencore, where he spent 27 years on the Office Services team. He took tremendous pride in his work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was one of the few employees considered essential, going into an empty office to keep things running for his colleagues working from home. In his final years with the company, he was proud to make the daily commute into New York City.
Tom met Andrea Orbanowski at Norwalk Community College, and they shared 30 years together, 22 of them as husband and wife. Their life in Old Greenwich centered on walks with their four dachshunds, Shadow, Peanut, Belle, and Cinnamon, along with time at OGTA and days at the beach. The couple set sail on several cruises each year, and this past summer they traveled to Italy and cruised the Mediterranean. At home, Tom never turned down a hand of Rummy and was always ready to help with the cheese fondue that has long been a centerpiece of Orbanowski family celebrations, especially Andrea’s birthday.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Andrea Orbanowski Dean; his siblings Mark Dean (Jaime), Christopher Dean (Carline), Jayne Dean Albani (Gaetano), Eric Dean, Mary Ann Lindwall (Mark), and David Dean (Alison Campbell); his 19 nieces and nephews; and his cherished dachshunds.
He was predeceased by his parents, Evan and Janice Dean, and his sister, Jennifer Dean Burke.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, at 9 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption, 98 Riverside Avenue, Westport.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom’s memory to Lucky Dog Refuge, 36 Pulaski Street, Stamford, CT 06902, or online here.
