WESTPORT–Following a tough loss at Ridgefield on Saturday, Staples beat New Canaan 36-31 at home on Tuesday night. Their record is now 4-3.
Senior captain McKenzie Didio scored a career high of 19 points, leading the team to victory.
“This was a game we knew we had to win,” Didio said. “Everyone stepped up and played so hard. We all had each other’s backs on the court, which helped us stay composed with the ball but very energized throughout the entire game.”
The New Canaan Rams closed in on Staples’ lead during the second half. Near the end of the fourth quarter, New Canaan had clawed its way back to a single-point deficit. It was McKenzie Didio’s fellow senior captain (and twin sister) Mia Didio who intercepted a pass and scored for a layup: Staples 34-31. She then went two for two from the foul line, cementing the Staples’ win, 36-31.
