WESTPORT — A Bridgeport man stole tools from a van parked in a Post Road East lot last month, police said.

Jimmie Bay Bennett, 55, was charged Feb. 10 with third-degree larceny in connection with the incident.

Police were dispatched Jan. 18 to the Shake Shack parking lot on Post Road East to investigate a complaint from a man, who reported that while he was inside someone had rummaged through his work van and stole some tools.

The man then spotted a black pickup truck leaving the parking, which he believed was being driven by the thief, police said.

Police issued an alert for the vehicle, and Fairfield police stopped the pickup a short time later. Tools reported stolen in the Westport incident were recovered from the truck, according to the report.

The driver was identified as Jimmie Bennett, and a warrant for his arrest was issued. He was taken into custody Feb. 10 while appearing at state Superior Court in Stamford on an unrelated charge, police said.

He was taken back to Westport Police Department headquarters, where he was formally changed. Bond was set at $50,000.
