To The Editor:
I can’t help feeling that the RTM’s endorsement of the Westport Transit District is an unfortunate example of doing the same thing over and over again, while hoping for a different result.
It’s high time for us to face the fact that it makes no sense for Westport to have an independent transit district in an area that already boasts seven other uncoordinated districts.
Public transportation is the very definition of a regional problem and to pretend that an inadequately funded, independent local system with no professional oversight can do the job is just plain folly.
Doing away with our mostly feckless district and addressing our transportation needs by consolidation with Norwalk, which is better funded and managed, would be a long-overdue first step toward dealing with a regional problem in a manner that stands a chance of delivering a much-needed service to our citizens and maybe — just maybe — contributing to easing traffic concerns.
