______________________________
Robert “Bob” Perliss, of Westport, born Dec. 25, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y., passed away on June 27, 2023.
Bob is survived by wife, Ruth-Anne; children, Steve (and Jolie Chan) and Leora Freedman (and Eric); stepdaughters, Jody Ring, Melissa Ring and Lorraine Ring, and grandchildren, Nessiya, Mollly-Anne, Ila, Claire and Alec.
Bob graduated from Brooklyn Polytech and went on to forge a meaningful career in space exploration, most proudly as a senior engineer on NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope under Perkin-Elmer. During his long career, he served as an engineer on projects such as the KH-9 Hexagonal and the inception of the Kitt Peak Observatory, home to one of the largest solar telescopes in the world.
Bob was a longtime member of Temple Israel in Westport, and an active participant and contributor to the local public libraries in Westport and Norwalk, donating extensive documents on the Hubble Space Telescope Program. He held honors from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center for his contributions to the success of the HST.
Among loved ones, Bob, or “Saba” to his grandchildren, instilled unparalleled wonder and imagination in those who shared in his passion for exploration and the arts.
He boasted a long-standing friendship with famed New York Gag Syndicate comics Jerry Marcus, Orlando Busino, Dana Fradon and more. In tandem with his intimate ties to the comic world, was his pride in the familiar superheroes born from the minds of family members, Martin Goodman and Stan Lee.
May the memory of Bob forever be a blessing and a gentle reminder of the endless reaches of awe and imagination.
“Baruch Dayan HaEmet.”
