Kathryn E. McCabe, 97, of Fairfield and former longtime Westport resident, wife of the late Barry G. McCabe, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, June 30, 2024.

Kathryn was born in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of the late Norman Dean Ellison and Luella (Durst) Ellison. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948 and was a resident of Westport and Fairfield for 43 years and 16 years, respectively.

Kathryn had a lifelong passion for living life to the fullest, people, animals and the arts. Kathryn was a social worker in Detroit and Norwalk, where she worked for STAR.

Kathryn was a frequent volunteer at Earthplace nature center in Westport. Kathryn was a true bibliophile and spent much of her time reading, especially non-fiction. Kathryn enjoyed the opera, played the piano and ukelele, and sang for the enjoyment of others.

She traveled to Europe (St. Moritz and Serfaus, Austria) with her young family to ski, and sailed on European rivers and Mediterranean cruises in her later years with family and friends. Kathryn enjoyed the outdoors, especially water skiing, snow skiing, tennis and boating.

She taught her children and grandchildren to snow ski (in Michigan, the Northeast, Europe and the West) and water ski. Kathryn spent many summers at the family cottage on Lake Erie near Harrow, Ontario, even after moving from Michigan to Connecticut in 1965. Kathryn loved animals and her cats and dogs through the years and celebrated her 90th birthday with horseback riding.

Survivors include her twin daughters, Janet L. Gibbons and her husband Ken of Hyde Park, Vt., and Marjorie S. Wroblewski and her husband Broni of Fairfield; a son, Richard G. McCabe and his wife Donna of Acton, Mass.; four grandchildren, Greg Gibbons and his wife Jennifer, Geoff Gibbons and his wife Melissa, Lauren Wroblewski and her fiancée, Ferg Young, and Ryan McCabe, and five great-grandchildren, Emma, Colin, James, Beckett and Jackson.

Kathryn was predeceased by three brothers, Richard Ellison, Norman Ellison and Jack Ellison.

Kathryn’s (aka Kathy, Katy, Mimi) family and many friends celebrated her life on July 5 at the Gaelic-American Club in Fairfield.
