Irene G. D’Amico, beloved wife of Peter J. D’Amico for 60 years, passed away peacefully on Jan. 2, 2026, at the age of 94.
Irene was born on Oct. 14, 1931, in Ystad, Sweden, to the late Karl and Helga Fredriksson. She came to the United States in 1962 with a short-term visit in mind, until she met her beloved Peter through a friend—an encounter that changed her life forever. During their courtship, they built their dream house on the hill in Westport and moved in on their wedding day. Their idyllic and beautifully decorated surroundings remain their treasured home, where friends and family are always welcome—Välkommen.
Irene was a registered nurse in Sweden but always had a passion for interior design. While serving as office manager for the family businesses, she launched her own interior decorating store, Irene Decorating, in Westport, where she enjoyed many years serving a wide range of clientele. In her spare time, she was devoted to her beautiful flowers and gardens. She loved animals, particularly the many dogs and cats she and Peter raised and adored. Irene enjoyed traveling and visited her native Sweden every year. She had a keen wit and a wonderful sense of humor, and everyone always knew where she stood.
Irene and her husband were highly philanthropic, supporting many organizations, especially those related to children. She gratefully lived a happy and full life.
In addition to her loving husband, Peter, Irene is survived by a nephew and a cousin in Sweden; a brother-in-law, Anthony D’Amico of Westport; a sister-in-law, Geraldine (D’Amico) Stauss of Fairfield; along with 17 nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Waveny LifeCare Network in New Canaan—including the director, nurses, social workers, chaplain and aides—for the exceptional care, kindness, and love they provided to Irene.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life for Irene on Friday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church on Newtown Avenue in Norwalk, followed by a luncheon in her honor at the St. Ann Club, 16 Hendricks Avenue, Norwalk.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irene’s name to Waveny LifeCare Network, 3 Farm Road, New Canaan, CT 06840.
