WESTPORT–The Staples girls soccer team took a big step forward yesterday, with a 2-1 win over previously unbeaten Darien.
For more than 25 minutes the teams traded fients and parries. At 28 minutes, Staples attacked.
Captain Maddie Sansone passed to Olivia Kovics, who kicked and scored the game’s first goal.
Darien’s best opportunity to retaliate came with one minute left in half, but their penalty kick soared over the goal.

Four minutes into the second half, with a crossing pass from Reilly McGeehan, Haley Roraback booted the ball into the corner of the net for the Wreckers second score.
Minutes later, Darien executed a perfect throw-in deep in Staples territory; Darien booted a goal-bound rocket which was snagged by goalie Cami Kolek.
Darien kept Staples on edge throughout the second half.
Sami Dewitt fouled a Waver at 22 minutes, which led to another spectacular Kolek deflection off the top of the goal. Darien’s subsequent corner kick was deflected by a Gabi Gonzalez header.
With five minutes left in the game, Staples fouled Darien and Darien’s foul kick made it to the net for their only score.
Final 2-1.
The Wreckers take on Fairfield Warde at home Monday at 4 p.m.
