WESTPORT–The town is seeking Westport voters to serve on 13 of its appointed boards, commissions and committees, First Selectman Kevin Christie said in a statement released Thursday.

The Flood & Erosion Control Board is in particular need of volunteers because it lacks a quorum and cannot conduct business. That five-member board, which also has three alternate members, is responsible for preventing and correcting erosion and flood damage in the town.

Christie’s statement said residents with an interest in flood resilience, coastal management, environmental stewardship, engineering, planning, or related fields are encouraged to apply.

Members of the Flood & Erosion Control Board are appointed by Christie to four-year terms.

Parks & Recreation Commission

Christie’s office didn’t respond Friday to questions, which included the weekly time commitment involved in serving; the number of volunteers needed; and whether that need had been greater in the past.

But Christie’s statement said the town welcomes volunteers from all professions, backgrounds, life experiences and political affiliations who want to contribute their time and expertise to the community.

“Westport has long benefited from residents who generously volunteer their time and talents in service to the community,” Christie said in the statement. “Whether you bring professional expertise or simply a desire to get involved, I encourage you to consider serving on one of our boards or commissions. Your voice and perspective can help shape the future of our community.”

The town is also seeking a resident to serve on the Aquarion Water Authority Representative Policy Board, which is responsible for approving water rates and overseeing the Authority’s governance.
