WESTPORT — A bread company with several hundred stores abroad and now growing in the U.S. is coming to the Compo Acres Shopping Center.

Cobs Bread, according to signs in the windows, will soon occupy 398 Post Road East.

When the shop might open isn’t known. The lights appeared off Thursday and no one answered a knock at the door. Messages left with the company’s headquarters in Vancouver, Canada, were not immediately returned.

Cobs has recent locations in Stamford and Greenwich. A worker at the Stamford store didn’t think the franchisee in Westport was the same.

Cobs Bread franchises bake their goods fresh each day, according to the company’s website. Nothing is refrigerated or frozen for future use. Any items left over are donated to local charities.

“At COBS Bread, we celebrate fresh,” the website states. “Whether you’re picking up a scratch-baked loaf of bread for the family or a decadent treat for yourself, you can always be sure that the day you walk into our bakery is the day we baked it.”

The space previously was home a Jersey Mike’s sandwich shop location, which opened in 2020.

To the left of the storefront is Trader Joe’s. To the right, a Pokeworks location.

Cobs Bread says it’s the world’s most successful bakery franchise with more than 700 locations in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the U.S.
