WESTPORT — Additional playreading, musical and family presentations have been added to the Westport Country Playhouse’s 2023 season.
The shows will include “Script in Hand” and “New Works” playreadings, “Family Festivities” events and “Mic in Hand” musical presentations.
“The pandemic’s impact on theater attendance and ticket sales forced us to cut back our 2023 season from five productions to three,” Gretchen Wright, the theater’s interim managing director, said in a press statement. “We’re now filling in the gaps in our performance calendar with additional broadly appealing programming. We plan to be open more often, with more entertainment options for our community.”
Among the newly added presentations are:
“New Works” series, 7 p.m. April 24: “Bad Accents,” a murder-mystery written by Matthew Greene and directed by Liam Lonegan, playhouse assistant artistic director. Tickets are $25.
Two other new theater pieces in the series are planned June 5 and Oct. 2 (titles to be announced), with an opportunity for the audience to meet the playwright in the lobby following the reading.
“Mic in Hand” musical concert, 7 p.m. May 15: “Ari Axlerod — A Place for Us: A Celebration of Jewish Broadway,” showcasing songs, stories and contributions to American musical theater by Jewish composers. Tickets are $25.
“Family Festivities” presentations: Musicals “The Pout-Pout Fish” on May 21 and “The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System” June 4, will be staged at 1 and 4 p.m. both days. Both are produced by TheaterWorksUSA, and tickets are priced at $25.
“Script in Hand” playreading, 7 p.m. June 12: Agatha Christie’s “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd,” a new adaptation of a Hercule Poirot mystery for stage by Mark Shanahan, the series curator. Tickets cost $25.
Additional “Script in Hand” presentations are in the works for Aug. 21 and Sept. 18, plus the previously announced dates on Nov. 13 and Dec. 11.
