WESTPORT–Trombonist Steve Davis will perform at the VFW Post 399 this Thursday. The show is part of the Jazz at the Post series, which offers a new concert each Thursday, presented by the Jazz Society of Fairfield County.
Davis will be joined by Greg Wall on saxophones, Maki Nientao on piano, Matt Dwonszyk on bass and Jason Tiemann on drums.
According to the release, Grammy-winning trombonist Steve Davis will bring an extraordinary night of hard bop to Jazz at the Post in a powerful, brass-forward tribute to four legendary NEA Jazz Masters: J.J. Johnson, Melba Liston, Slide Hampton, and Curtis Fuller. The appreciation comes full circle as Steve will also perform some of his own compositions from his recent releases.
Musical sets begin at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. The 7 p.m. set cover charge is $20 ($15 for students / veterans). The cover fee for the late set is $10.
An optional $25 dinner from Chef Derek Furino will be served from 6:15 p.m., no reservations required. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian options are available.
The Jazz Society of Fairfield County offers “free or low-cost concerts by accomplished artists, outreach to under-served audiences, and educational and performance opportunities for student, amateur and emerging professional musicians,” its website says.
Since 2015, the organization has worked with Post 399 to bring the weekly jazz event to the post’s home on the Saugatuck River, featuring “celebrated jazz artists such as Ethan Iverson, Antonio Hart, David Kikoski, Harvie S and Joe Farnsworth as well as introducing our audience to the new generation of musicians moving the tradition forward,” the society’s website says.
