WESTPORT — A concert by the Brian Torff Group, whose repertoire is described as “American roots music with an updated twist,” will take place Feb. 1 at Voices Café.

The performance is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the café in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Westport, 10 Lyons Plains Road.

Torff, who performs on guitar, harmonica, vocals and bass, will be joined by Wes Lewis on tenor and soprano saxophone, Nathan Edwards on soprano saxophone and Elijah Atkins on drums.

A professor of music at Fairfield University since 1993, Torff’s is also a composer and author whose research trips to the South have influenced his work. His books include, “Seize the Beat: The Evolution of American Music” and “In Love with Voices.”

Over the years, he has performed with Frank Sinatra, George Shearing, Mary Lou Williams, Erroll Garner, Marian McPartland and others.

Torff was co-chair of the Music Advisory Board for the National Endowment for the Arts in 1992, and in 2008 was named “Artist of the Year” by the Fairfield Arts Council.
