WESTPORT — A Norwalk man has been charged with trying to cash checks he allegedly stole from a local resident’s mailbox.
Lemont Linton, 52, was charged with third-degree identity theft and criminal attempt at sixth-degree larceny.
A complainant told police last Sept. 6 that two checks, placed in her mailbox with outgoing mail, apparently were stolen.
She later was informed by officials at a bank in Norwalk that a man had tried to cash the checks, using his driver’s license as identification. The license identified the man as Lemont Linton, according to the report.
Using video surveillance recordings and information shared with other law-enforcement agencies, police said they were able to identify Linton as the suspect and a warrant for his arrest was issued.
He was taken into custody Feb. 27, and unable to post $25,000 bond, he was taken for arraignment the next day at state Superior Court in Stamford.
