WESTPORT — In words and music, Westport saluted those who served in the nation’s armed forces at a Veterans Day ceremony in Town Hall on Monday.
The community event coincided with the traditional timing of Veterans Day observances — the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month — marking the signing of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918. Speakers sounded common themes of tribute and gratitude to American men and women for their service in the military and the sacrifices they made on behalf of the nation.
Master of ceremonies was Edward Karazin, a Superior Court judge trial referee and Staples High School graduate, who served with the Army during the Vietnam conflict. In 2021, he was inducted into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame.
Speaking with the benefit of personal experience, Karazin said veterans know the value of teamwork, as well as the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity and putting the common good above personal interests.

First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker, before reading her Veterans Day proclamation, paid tribute to the late Bill Vornkahl, longtime president of the Westport Veterans Council, known for his key role in planning the town’s annual Veterans Day ceremonies and Memorial Day parades. He died last January.
Alessandro Alderucci, a Staples High School senior, told the gathering that while veterans understand both sacrifice and the importance of fighting, they also understand the need for unity. In that respect, he urged them to stay engaged for the good of the community.
The Westport Community Band performed a selection of patriotic music for the occasion, including a medley of the anthems for each of the nation’s armed forces.
