WESTPORT — A hometown oarsman is rowing his boat in a quest for Olympics glory in Paris.

Oliver Bub, a 2020 graduate of Dartmouth College and 2016 Staples High School alumnus, will hit the water Sunday representing Team USA in the men’s pair competition at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.
Bub qualified for the USA squad by winning the men’s pairs at this year’s U.S. Olympic and Paralympic team trials/rowing, competing with William Bender, a Dartmouth student who is taking a year off to focus on the Olympics before finishing his senior year.
Long before Bub launches his boat at the Paris games, his training prepared him for the big day with an early taste of competitive rowing at the Saugatuck Rowing Club. He continued building on that foundation as a member of Dartmouth’s “Big Green” teams in Hanover, N.H.
Bub’s interest in rowing was fostered at an earlier age by his parents, Stefan and Mary Beth, who both rowed at Boston University.
And, perhaps as a result, Bub says one of his favorite stateside places to compete is the Head of the Charles regatta on the Charles River in Boston, where he has been part of several championship teams in recent years, according to USRowing.org.
Gov. Ned Lamont, in a statement Friday congratulating Bub and the seven other Connecticut athletes competing in the Paris games, said, “Qualifying to compete in the Olympics is the pinnacle of an athletic career, and I could not be more proud to have such a group of talented athletes from Connecticut who will be representing Team USA in Paris.
“To make it to the biggest athletic event in the world takes a lot of dedication, and their commitment to excellence makes them role models for our young athletes. I want each of them to know that there will be a strong contingent of us back home in Connecticut who will be cheering them on while they compete in Paris,” he added.
Three athletes who call Connecticut home will compete in this summer’s Paralympics Games, while 14 others with ties to the state — such as attending college — also are among the Olympics competitors.
