WESTPORT — A 28-year-old man is accused of an unprovoked, racially motivated attack on another person at a local mental health facility, police said.

Richard Christiansen, of North Haven, was charged March 15 with second-degree assault and first-degree intimidation due to bias/bigotry.

Police were dispatched Feb. 29 to investigate a fight that erupted at St. Vincent’s Behavioral Health Services on Long Lots Road.

The victim, who was punched in the face and  kicked in the head, had to be transported to a hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

The assailant — identified by witnesses as Richard Christiansen — allegedly attacked the victim without provocation “because of the victim’s race,” according to the report.

A warrant for Christiansen’s arrest was issued, and on March 15 he was transported to Police Department headquarters from the state’s Whiting Forensic Hospital in Middletown, where he was being held.

Christiansen was formally charged, and held on $275,000 bond. Unable to post the bond, he subsequently was transported to state Superior Court in Stamford for arraignment.
