WESTPORT — Westporter Rosie Lundberg was a gold medal winner at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Paris, France, last week.
Lundberg is one of three athletes from the Saugatuck Rowing Club’s junior rowing program who were selected to be members of Team USA for the international competition Aug. 5.
Lundberg competed with the women’s U19 4+ team, which finished first after “a bit of a tough start, but clicked into turbocharged gear in the last 1,000 meters,” according to a release from the club.
The other two rowers from the local club who competed for Team USA are coxswain Ella Casano, whose team placed fourth in the women’s U19 8+ event, and George Bentley, coxswain for the men’s U19 4+ boat which finished fifth. Both are Fairfield residents.
After her team’s gold-medal finish, Lundberg exclaimed, “I have never raced harder in my life!” And, according to the club’s report, her mother, Daniela, described the achievement as “one of the greatest moments of my life.”
“It is an honor to have George, Ella and Rosie represent not only the United States, but also Saugatuck on the world scale,” Dave Grossman, the Saugatuck Rowing Club’s junior men’s head coach, said in the statement.
Mike O’Hara, the SRC junior women’s head coach, added, “I’m incredibly proud of these athletes. To see them wearing the U.S. colors, competing and winning is just an outstanding feeling … I’m a lucky coach for sure.”
