WESTPORT — An 18-year-old accused of stealing a pickup truck from a local residence was tracked down by a cellphone that police said was left in the stolen vehicle.

DeMarcus Bennett, of Stamford, was charged Aug. 16 with first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny in connection with the incident.

The Toyota Tacoma pickup was reported stolen from the driveway of a local residence sometime last March 14 overnight into the next morning.

The truck was recovered March 16 in Stamford, police said, and a cellphone was found inside.

The detective investigating the case secured a warrant to search the phone’s contents, and discovered evidence that linked Bennett to the vehicle theft, according to the police report.

Based on additional evidence, a warrant for Bennett’s arrest was issued and he turned himself in Aug. 16 at Police Department headquarters.

He was held on $20,000 bond and scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 17 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
