SUMMARY:MoCACT Sessions: Heida Hermanns International Piano Competition 2025 Winners Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening showcasing the winners of the 2025 Heida Hermanns International Music Competition. Since taking top honors last fall at MoCACT\, these already exceptional pianists have gone on to impressive achievements\, performing on major stages and earning recognition at worldwide competitions.\n\n\nYe-Eun Hyun\, a native of South Korea\, began her musical journey at the piano at just five years old. Her early promise was confirmed when she won top prize at the TBC Broadcasting Piano Competition and made her orchestral debut with the Daegu Philharmonic while still in high school. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the Korea National University of Arts under Minsoo Sohn\, supported by a full Samsung Foundation scholarship\, before relocating to the United States in 2021 to complete her Master of Music at New England Conservatory with Academic Honors under Wha Kyung Byun. Her achievements include the Korean Honor Award from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea\, top honors at the Vienna International Piano Competition\, and the special contemporary music prize at the Knoxville International Piano Competition. She will soon make her Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall\, and is currently pursuing her doctorate with Deborah Moriarty at Michigan State University on full scholarship.\n\n\nZhu Wang has been celebrated by the New York Times’ Anthony Tommasini\, who praised his performances for pairing lyrical warmth with crisp clarity. A First Prize winner of the 2020 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions and Gold Medalist at the 2024 New Orleans International Piano Competition\, Zhu was also a finalist at the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition and a prizewinner at the 2024 Cleveland International Piano Competition. Legendary pianist Fou Ts’ong once described him as an “excellent pianist with a natural sense of harmony and imagination.” Recent seasons have brought appearances with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s\, the New York Youth Symphony at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium\, and orchestras in Columbus\, Kansas City\, Spokane\, Memphis\, and Richmond. The upcoming season includes Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Louisiana Philharmonic\, recitals at the Kaufman Music Center and Broman Concert Series\, chamber performances at Big Arts and Chesapeake Music Festival\, and a North American and European tour with violinist Randall Goosby. Born in Hunan Province\, China\, Zhu began playing at age five\, inspired by his grandfather’s love of music. A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School\, he studied with Emanuel Ax\, Robert McDonald\, and Zhe Tang\, and now lives in New York City with his wife\, Chloe\, and their two cats\, Chaz and Tùzi.

SUMMARY:Encaustic and Collage with Leslie Giuliani
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, we’ll explore the ancient yet contemporary medium of Encaustic—beeswax-based paint that also serves as a versatile adhesive—to create unique collages. This technique is wonderfully flexible: if you’re not happy with an arrangement\, simply re-melt and re-position. Participants will learn how to build richly layered artworks using Encaustic as “glue\,” incorporating fabric\, stencils\, prints\, personal drawings\, even Spirograph designs! We’ll also experiment with laser copy transfers and direct drawing. No prior experience is necessary\, and all materials are included.\n\n\nLeslie Giuliani is an American contemporary artist whose work merges textiles\, encaustic\, oil painting\, and printmaking. Born in Philadelphia\, PA\, she earned her BFA from the University of Delaware and continued her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Her artwork is held in the collections of the Housatonic Museum of Art\, the State of Connecticut\, and numerous private collections. Giuliani has been awarded an Artist Fellowship Grant from the State of Connecticut for Craft as well as a residency fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center. She lives and works in Weston\, CT.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Looking for History\, join exhibiting artist Rick Shaefer for a guided tour of Colossi on Thursday\, July 9\, at 6pm.\n\n\nDuring this one-hour walkthrough\, Shaefer will lead Museum visitors through the exhibition\, sharing insights into the inspiration\, historical references\, and creative methods that inform the works on view. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion about the artist’s concepts\, materials\, and techniques.\n\n\nShaefer’s exhibition at MoCACT includes selections from three ongoing bodies of work: the Colossi\, Refugee Trilogy\, and Liberty Dismantled series. These works collectively examine the transhistorical themes of migration\, displacement\, national identity\, and the tension between ideals of freedom and the realities of division.\n\n\nAlso on view are two short videos that offer a close read of two major drawings from the Colossi series\, The New Colossus and Siege. The videos\, created specifically for this exhibition\, offer visitors a deeper understanding of the historical precedents\, symbolism\, and formal techniques that shape the artist’s practice. Together\, these works invite reflection on the structures — both physical and metaphorical — that impact our world and our relationships with one another.

SUMMARY:Architectural Elegy: A Mourning Ritual for Lost Spaces
DESCRIPTION:In response to The Disappointed Tourist\, Ellen Harvey’s on-going project of painting lost places\, Dannielle Tegeder of Hilma’s Ghost will lead a meditative ceremony with Ellen Harvey honoring demolished and disappearing buildings through collective remembrance. Participants will create ephemeral memorials by drawing or writing about a place they miss and sharing brief stories of places that shaped their lives. Drawing inspiration from Harvey’s practice of preserving the overlooked\, participants will honor our forgotten spaces through a knotting ritual creating a temporary community to support each other in our grief. The ritual closes with a moment of silence for the places and structures that once held our histories.\n\n\nDuration: 60 minutes | All materials provided | Participants are invited to dress in mourning or black (not required) | All are welcome

They typically begin with a short guided meditation to relax the participants as they lie down on yoga mats with blankets\, bolsters and eye pillows. As the soothing sounds wash over the participants—hence the term “sound bath”— Lisa allows the Himalayan bowls\, gongs\, crystal bowls\, drums\, rainsticks\, percussion\, nature sounds and her voice to work their magic. Coming out of the Sound Bath\, the participants often feel more relaxed\, reset and refreshed.\n\n\nLisa Pak is the founder and owner of Hummingbird Healing Center\, whose mission is to help people heal through the power of sound.\n\n\nShe has received several sound healing certifications from prestigious institutions\, including those from the Sage Academy of Sound in Woodstock\, NY and the Sound Healers Academy in the UK.\n\n \n\n\nA lifelong spiritual seeker practicing yoga and meditation since her twenties\, Lisa is also a trained classical musician and vocalist. In recent years\, she has focused on the voice as an instrument of healing\, rather than performance or entertainment. She stands on the shoulders of her teachers and mentors\, who are pioneers in the field of voice\, including Silvia Nakkash\, Chloe Goodchild\, Heather Houston and the Brothers Koran.
